Document your Azure Architecture
Posted in Azure
Like me you may need to document your Azure Architecture and over the last few days I have came across some decent materials for doing just that and I thought I should share with you me findings, so here goes: –
- Azure Solutions Architectures – https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/solutions/architecture/
- Microsoft 3D Visio How to walk through – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tag2HNAJh4Y&feature=youtu.be
- Microsoft 3D Visio Template – https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=48243
- Microsoft Azure, Cloud and Enterprise Symbol / Icon Set – Visio stencil, PowerPoint, PNG, SVG https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=41937
Armed with the above you can go off and create your Azure Architecture documents with ease – enjoy!

Good post thanks for sharing. I found this also very handy as it covers the structure of a document too. https://www.cloudelicious.net/how-to-write-a-design-document-for-azure/. Maybe Identity deserves an even higher priority.
I really like these Visio stencils, as they’re full-colour. It makes documentation and diagrams a little nicer.

I find this also very helpful: https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=bencoleman.armview
Yeah it’s pretty awesome
Realise that this is a really old thread, but you can now do something similar to Ben Colemans Armview above in the Azure Portal.
The trick is to use preview portal (https://rc.portal.azure.com/). Select your resource group, scroll down to “Automation” and “Export Template” in the left hand menu. Top Of the JSON click on the “Visualise Template” to create a template visualisation.
Does anyone know any ways of exporting RG resources into a set of tables in a word doc (or similar?)
More details on this can be found here : https://blog.hametbenoit.info/2020/04/29/azure-you-can-now-visualize-your-azure-resources-when-exporting-as-a-template/
Additionally the “Amazing Icon Downloader” Chrome (& Edge) extension is great for ripping Visio icons from the Azure Portal
